Enhanced course design aims to support students early in their educational journey

��ɫ��Ƶ is pleased to announce the adoption of an enhanced mobile-compatible design for the “Foundations for University Success” course, which is the required entry-point course for most undergraduate students. This change follows the successful pilot of the enhanced mobile- compatible course design and aims to provide a more accessible and flexible learning experience for students.

Recent research highlights the critical role of smartphones in supporting students accessing educational resources and found that students often during in-between moments of their day. However, students also reported they faced frustrations due to small screens and challenges with accessing course content that isn’t mobile-friendly. While smaller screens may still not be the ideal experience, the new design of the “Foundations for University Success” course addresses the issue of access to content by moving away from assignments that require students to download and upload documents.

“At ��ɫ��Ƶ, we are deeply committed to delivering an exceptional learning experience for our students that also meets them where they are,” shared Dean of the College of General Studies, Briana Houlihan. “Implementing a foundational course design that does not require one specific piece of technology to succeed underscores our dedication to supporting our students’ unique needs throughout their educational journey. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to innovate within an academically rigorous environment—enhancing the accessibility and quality of education for every student we serve. We acknowledge that students need to gain computer skills and the ability to use certain software, so that will remain a focus in later courses.”

The updated course is designed to help learners acclimate to the online school environment while ensuring they have the opportunity to secure the necessary tools to achieve their academic goals. The responsive course design is beneficial for students who are eager to begin their educational journey but may need additional time to gather essential resources, such as a personal computer.

Key highlights of the “Foundations for University Success” course design include:

• Mobile Compatibility: The course is optimized for mobile devices, allowing students to access course materials and complete assignments on-the-go.

• Supportive Learning Environment: The design focuses on helping students adjust to online learning, providing them with the time and resources needed to succeed.
