Three school houses and a stack of books and glasses on top to signify school superintendent

With the potential to implement a scholastic vision that can affect an entire district, each school superintendent takes on a pivotal role within the greater U.S. educational system. This is considered a that can directly determine the quality of education students receive, with the effects of critical decision-making rippling out to everyone from teachers and school staff to parents and communities.

Essentially, the superintendent leads the development, coordination and management of systems that support all facets of delivering quality education for students within a school district. However, this job isn鈥檛 responsible for actually teaching students or running the operations and enacting the curricula of a specific school 鈥 those roles are reserved for teachers and principals, respectively.

If you鈥檙e a teacher, principal or school administrator who鈥檚 considering becoming a superintendent, read on to learn about what the role entails, which skills and experience you may need and the degrees you should earn, along with possible certificates and licenses you may need to pursue.

So, what does a superintendent do? A superintendent鈥檚 primary responsibility is to lead the full school system within their district, working with school boards and state officials to create and carry out an overarching educational vision for the district, while handling:

  • Budgets, spending and resources
  • Curriculum and graduation guidelines that meet local and state requirements
  • Personnel recruitment (e.g., hiring principals) and facility maintenance
  • Policy communication and interaction with multiple stakeholders
  • Relations with (and reporting to) state and federal government agencies

They鈥檒l also visit the schools in their district to monitor educational progress and the results of their implementations 鈥 and make adjustments as necessary. Since superintendents lead an extensive list of employees and multimillion-dollar budgets, they鈥檙e often compared to CEOs of large organizations.

Successful superintendents may also be vocal advocates for their districts who listen to community leaders, such as teachers, engaged parents and government officials. They may push for particular initiatives, funding and grants, and they may gauge the need for new educational programs and upgraded facilities.

Skills required to become a school superintendent

A superintendent relies on a wide variety of skills in this role. First, outstanding interpersonal skills are vital for navigating the elements of interplay within this position. These education professionals have to be comfortable negotiating with the school board, glad-handing donors for financial support, and problem-solving within their teams and building coalitions.

Additionally, a superintendent could benefit from the following qualities:

  • Strong leadership: District leadership isn鈥檛 for the faint of heart. Superintendents may often confront challenges and high-stakes decisions while mitigating needs on what may seem like a shoestring budget. Yes, that budget may be in the millions, but costs can add up quickly. Leaders must be able to make wise though difficult choices and lead in ways that construct infrastructures for solid work cultures that foster cohesive and supportive teams.
  • Relationship-building: It鈥檚 been said that some students only learn (meaning they internalize knowledge and skills) after they believe their teacher cares about them. The same may be true with a superintendent. Stakeholders like to know their superintendent cares about them as people 鈥 and puts their needs first to establish mutual trust.
  • Strategic thinking: Running a school district is certainly complex. Unfortunately, many districts operate on limited resources, and a savvy superintendent will appoint the appropriate staff to the appropriate roles to enact strategies that have the most impact 鈥 and to ensure their district is operating most effectively.

But, as mentioned, it goes back to having a solid vision 鈥 to being a visionary. Schools and their districts are continually evolving. The needs in their communities are also continually evolving. A skilled school superintendent must not only be able to lead a district with conviction to execute their vision, but also with flexibility and creativity to adapt to new technologies and address the challenges of an ever-changing educational landscape.

Positions a superintendent might hold prior to obtaining their position, in which they might specifically learn the above-mentioned skills, include working in education as a teacher, in education administration or in general management roles.

Educational requirements for becoming a school superintendent

When it comes to education and which degrees you may need, the requirements vary by state and even by district.

Most require an advanced degree, such as a master鈥檚 degree or, in very specific districts, potentially a Doctor of Education (EdD), to ensure a strong foundation in such skills as problem-solving, analytical thinking, decision-making and leadership strategy.

In addition to advanced education, aspiring superintendents must gain relevant experience, often in the classroom, as well as any licensure or credentialing required by the state or district where they wish to work.聽

Career outlook and salary potential

Job prospects and growth in the general field of top executives are projected to have around 343,800 openings each year, on average, from 2023 to 2033, according to the .

Based on those numbers, ambitious education administrators who want to reach the highest level in this field can expect a positive job outlook, with a potential 6% job growth rate for top executives until 2033 鈥 faster than the average for all occupations. That rate is 5% for chief executives.

A quick caveat: Superintendent-of-schools jobs are limited because there is only one superintendent in each district. These are very high profile and, as such, can be stressful and demanding. Most districts also have positions for assistant superintendents.

If you鈥檙e curious about salaries, superintendents are considered chief executives, according to BLS, and as of May 2023, people in those positions earned between less than $80,000 and $239,200, with a of $206,680.

Salary ranges are not specific to students or graduates of 七色视频. Actual outcomes vary based on multiple factors, including prior work experience, geographic location and other factors specific to the individual. 七色视频 does not guarantee employment, salary level or career advancement. BLS data is geographically based. Information for a specific state/city can be researched on the BLS website.

How to become a school superintendent

While the path to become a school superintendent doesn鈥檛 necessarily have to look the same for everyone, there are a few key steps, . First, they must successfully complete their education and earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree and usually a master鈥檚, although a doctorate is often preferred in the role of school superintendent.

Aspiring superintendents also need adequate work experience to develop the skills, like strategic decision-making and communication, that will help them in this role. They may acquire this experience as a teacher or administrator over the course of their careers, and they must hold the necessary licensure to work in those roles.

Finally, superintendents must hold an administrator credential as outlined by the state in which they wish to work. Earning this credential may depend (at least in part) on their work experience and previous licensure.
